From 1974 to Today: Our Story
Lowveld Eye Institute is built on a remarkable legacy of eye care spanning five decades in Mpumalanga. What began in 1974 as a solo practice under Dr. Roelie van Rooyen steadily grew into a trusted name in ophthalmology. In 1986, Dr. Danie Louw took over the practice, carrying forward Dr. van Rooyen’s vision, and was later joined by Dr. Carl Wilms in 1989. Together, they developed the Nelspruit Eye Institute into a leading, well-known centre for ophthalmic care in the Lowveld, serving patients from across the region with distinction.
Today, we are proud to take the next step in this progression with the establishment of the Lowveld Eye Institute. Purpose-built with modern hospital and theatre facilities, and led by a dedicated team of specialists, the Institute represents a bold new chapter in eye care for the region. Our focus is firmly on the future – combining state-of-the-art technology, subspecialty expertise, and patient-centred care to deliver world-class outcomes.
